In the Central Region, a three-story structure has collapsed in Winneba.

The total number of storey buildings that have collapsed nationwide this year now stands at five.

Five people who were inside the building managed to escape unharmed, according to DO2 Kwesi Hugues, the commander of the Winneba Municipal Fire Service, who spoke to Rapid News GH.

He claimed that on Tuesday, at around 3:15 p.m., the Accra-Cape Coast Highway received a distress call regarding a collapsed structure after the Winneba Roundabout.

He claimed that the structure had been finished and included tenants, and he added that fortunately no one was wounded because, at the time of the collapse, the majority of individuals had already left for work.

He claimed that five of the tenants who were present left the building before it collapsed.

Trapped

“Thankfully, nobody became stuck.

They were constantly on the lookout for collapse warning indicators because they were aware that the structure had problems.

“What had happened was that some had gone off to their regular jobs and others had gone off to school.

Therefore, when we arrived, those who appeared to be doing nothing—roughly five people—were the ones in the house; they all emerged, he added.

However, according to DO2 Hugues, the tenants’ property was completely ruined with little chance of recovery.

He claimed that when they asked the facility’s residents if there was money in the destroyed structure, every single one of them stated no.

He said, “We are now waiting to meet the owner of the residence to have further talks with him.

Fortunately, everyone was there when the fire department arrived on time, he claimed, so “we conducted a head count and made sure that the electricity connection to the house was disconnected.”

When asked how long the building had been there, he was unable to provide an exact figure but stated it had been there for a very long time. Winneba

Ruins of buildings

Three multi-story buildings fell in three different locations in the first week of this month, all in quick succession.

They are a three-story building at Nanakrom in the Adentan municipality, a six-story building at the University for Development Studies’ City Campus at Sagnarigu in Tamale in the Northern Region, and a three-story building at the SDA Junction on the Adentan side of La-Nkwantanang Madina in Accra.

One person lost their life in that tragedy, and three others had injuries of different seriousness.

Committees

Four ad hoc committees were formed by important professional organizations to look into the causes of the collapsed buildings in certain regions of the country after the previous structures collapsed.
