Five members of the Western Togoland Restoration Front (WTRF) have each received a five-year prison term with hard labor from the Accra High Court.

In an effort to keep individuals from other regions of Ghana from reaching the Volta Region, the inmates in 2020 attacked police officers, destroyed a police car and a police station, and blocked highways going to the Volta Region. They wanted to break away from Ghana, and that was their motivation.

The prisoners are Joseph Nyamewu, Wisdom Kuvor, Afetorgbor Kpogo, Ebenezer Gblorkpor, and Israel Bessah Kpexor.

Trial of the Western Togoland separatists

They received their punishment for being members of the Western Togoland Restoration Front, an illegal organization that aimed to sever the Volta and Oti Regions from Ghana.

The maximum penalty permitted by law was five years.

The court decided to issue a heavy punishment to dissuade anyone who want to engage in crimes that harm the national security and sovereignty of the country, the presiding judge,Justice Mary Yanzur said, even though she took into account the fact that the five prisoners had already spent roughly two years on remand.
