The government has been urged by Occupy Ghana to form a Commission of Inquiry into the Akosombo Dam water spill in order to determine the exact cause of the incident and whether it could have been avoided.

The organization firmly believed that all of the issues satisfied the requirements set forth in Chapter 23 of the Constitution for a subject of public interest and significance that justifies the creation of a Commission of Inquiry.

The organization stated in a statement yesterday that the commission’s creation could aid in identifying and prosecuting individuals at fault. Akosombo

“We anticipate independent police investigations that result in prosecutions if there are any signs of criminal activity or negligence.

In addition, even although the incident was unexpected, this experience has made it foreseeable, so we now know what needs to be done and how to prevent a similar catastrophe in the future.

According to the statement, the need for an impartial commission of inquiry stems from the belief that, in order to protect Ghanaians and the country’s future, the whole truth must be discovered and lessons must be learned. Akosombo

Repercussions

The pressure group also voiced worries about the disaster’s severe effects and the widespread devastation it had caused.

As the fallout developed, it declared that it had complied with the official justifications for the circumstances but remained unsatisfied.

It’s hard to believe that we were totally unprepared for the abrupt rise in water level at the dam, leaving us with no choice except to let a big, catastrophic leak happen.

“It is alarming to even consider the scale of devastation that could have occurred had the dam faced complete failure, as tragically witnessed in Derna, Libya, resulting in the reported loss of over 11,000 precious lives,” the statement read. “The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated.”

Similar catastrophes

According to the organization, its concerns have grown as it considers the possibility of similar tragedies.

For instance, it stated that Burkina Faso opens the valves of the Bagre Dam virtually annually to release surplus water, which frequently destroys homes, farms, cattle, and food crops in areas of the country’s north. Akosombo

According to the statement, this generated concerns about the nation’s reaction and readiness systems.

It stated that the way people developed along riverbanks in the catchment areas was one important issue that needed to be addressed right away.

“We have to accept that there will always be settlements in these places, but how they are planned and built needs to change. Akosombo

According to the statement, “We must adapt to ensure that these communities are not unduly exposed to the risk of devastating floods.”

It also conveyed its appreciation to everyone who had helped organize emergency relief assistance for the villages that had been affected.

“We appreciate your unwavering support and commend your dedication to providing aid in these challenging times,” the message continued.
