Bawumia does not deserve preferential treatment in the NPP flagbearer race, according to Agyepong.
Kwabena Agyepong, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party, has warned executives not to try to impose their preferred presidential candidate on the party.
Mr Agyepong believes that flagbearer candidates should be given a fair chance to campaign and be elected by NPP delegates on their merits.
His remarks come after some NPP members suggested that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia be appointed to replace President Akufo-Addo in the 2024 elections.
However, on Thursday, February 23, former Press Secretary to former President John Kufuor, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, said that no one deserves preferential treatment in the flagbearership race.
Agyapong’s statement about NPP Flagbearer
“Nobody is denying him [Dr Bawumia] his chance to contest, just that we in the NPP, we have a way of doing things. He only needs to go around and talk to the party members in the hopes of winning. But trying to impose a coronation on us will not work. In the NPP, there would be no coronation,” Mr Agyepong told host Bernard Avle.
Mr Agyepong also denied claims that the NPP only uses Northerners for votes but does not give them a shot at the presidency.
According to him, the NPP had to violate their own rules and constitution in order to make Dr. Bawumia Akufo-Addo’s running mate.
“The party has a constitution, rules and regulations, you can’t even get on the ticket if you have not demonstrated membership for five years, but the party took a decision for Ohene Ntow to waive that [for Dr. Bawumia], create a card [for him] and on that day become a number two. It had never happened before, but we did it because of our admiration for candidate Akufo-Addo. So, if you have done such a large waiver and served as Vice President, and you consider that to be using and dumping, whoever says that should stop saying that. I don’t want to hear that”.
