Andrew Egyapa Mercer, a member of parliament representing Sekondi, has asked those evaluating Vice President Dr. Mahama Bawumia’s work as the head of economic management to consider his full tenure in that position.

According to Mercer, Dr. Bawumia oversaw an economy that expanded on average by 7% in 2017 and 2018.

He responded to allegations of the Vice President by Assin Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong over the management of the economy on Monday, July 17 on the Big Issue on TV3. “If you are measuring him, you need to start from 2017 and 2018 to date,” he added.

He added that it is true that exogenous causes, for which the Vice President claimed no responsibility, had contributed to Ghana’s economy’s recent difficulties. Mercer

“What occurred in 2020? Dr. Bawumia was in charge of an economy that, on average, grew by 7% in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Kennedy Agyapong is free to express his opinion, but the Ghanaian people and delegates will consider the overall picture and acknowledge that the years 2020 and 2021 were outliers and what led to them.

They acknowledge that Bawumia is not to blame for the problems that have led to our current situation; yet, this does not mean that he is failing in his obligations. If you believe that COVID had no effect on the economy because he did not bring it, then that is your beef. He is the one who will assist us break the eight, according to the Deputy Energy Minister. Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mr. Kennedgy Agyapong blasted the government for mismanaging the local currency.

He claimed that as of March 2022, he had $40 million in Cedi equivalent, but as a result of the Cedi’s depreciation by August of the same year, the value had fallen to $16 million.

The bad performance of the Cedi versus the main trade currencies, especially the Dollar, is typically attributed to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the head of the economic management team and a potential NPP candidate. However, Mr. Agyapong did not specifically name him.

On Sunday, July 16, Mr. Ken Agyapong, an Assin Central lawmaker who is running to be chosen flagbearer, said during a campaign stop in Kintampo East, “We would have problems if we don’t perform a clean campaign because I will reply to every charge made against me.

“You call yourself a strategist, but the Dollar cost 4 Cedis when we took over, and today it costs 12 Cedis, yet you identify as one.

“I had the equivalent of 40 million dollars in Cedis in March 2022. By August 2022, the value of the 40 million dollars had fallen to 16 million.”
