The Economic and Organized Crime Office ( EOCO ) and the Ghana Police Service have busted a human trafficking ring in a combined operation, which resulted in the detention of 49 Nigerian citizens.

In a statement, EOCO stated that the suspects, who were comprised of 47 males and 2 girls and ranged in age from 18 to 34, were apprehended in Accra.

The people that were arrested are allegedly involved in cybercrime and human trafficking.

Authorities raided the syndicate’s hideout during the operation and found and seized 70 laptop computers, two saloon cars, 51 mobile phones, nine internet modems, and other gadgets.

Forty-five of the suspects were found to be human trafficking victims after further inquiry and screening, while the other four were found to be traffickers. The victims that were saved have been returned to Nigeria, where they will meet up with their loved ones.

Godstine Omoruyi, Junior Nosa Omoruyi, Marvelous Omoruyi, and Evbuomwan Idowu, the four suspected traffickers, have been brought before the court to face legal action.

The operation was carried out in response to information gathered by EOCO, which suggested that young Nigerians who had been smuggled into Ghana were present.

These victims were lured in with the promise of employment prospects, but when they arrived, they were forced to participate in cybercrime operations. To keep their victims under control, the traffickers used torture and physical assault.

Authorities are carrying out their investigations while working to apprehend the culprits and support the victims who have been rescued.
