The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has responded to former President John Mahama’s intention to remove teacher licensure tests if re-elected in 2024.

According to CETAG, teacher licensure tests are critical to guaranteeing quality in the profession and should not be discontinued.

As part of his campaign message for the 2024 elections, opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer John Mahama stated that a future NDC government will abolish the tests.

On Monday, November 20, the President of CETAG, Prince Obeng Himah, told Accra-based Citi FM that licensure tests were critical in assuring the competency and quality of teaching professionals.

“In my opinion, it is something positive that should not be canceled.” That is CETAG; we have indicated that we should put into action what we decided on two years ago at a conference: that students wishing to enter the teaching profession should take admission tests.”

Why is the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination held?

Section 9 of the Education Act, 2008 (Act 778) mandates the National Teaching Council (NTC) to strengthen the professional standing and position of teachers, license, and register teachers in Ghana.

In September 2018, the first-ever teacher licensure examination was given.

The goal of the examination is to allow trained teachers to obtain a professional license while also attracting exceptional fresh graduates from universities and institutes of education who possess the essential professional knowledge, abilities, and attitudes to deliver effectively in schools.
