The Fifa men’s world rankings, which were revealed on Thursday, June 29, have Ghana Black Stars moving up to position 59.

This is a reflection of the four-time African champions’ better play under the direction of newly hired head coach Chris Hughton, who assumed over in March.

They haven’t lost while Hughton has been in charge, picking up two draws and a victory in Kumasi over Angola. These encouraging outcomes have put Ghana in a good position to advance to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Ghana is the 11th-best team in Africa, while currently being the 59th-highest overall ranking. In the African rankings, Morocco is ranked first after becoming the first African team to advance past the quarterfinals of a World Cup. Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt round out the top five. The top 10 list also features notable African nations Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso.

On a global scale, Argentina, the defending champion, continues to be at the top of the standings, closely followed by France and Brazil in second and third, respectively.

Notably, Croatia has climbed ahead of the Netherlands, while England has passed Belgium to take over the fourth slot. Spain, Italy, and Portugal complete the top 10 teams in the rankings.

The Black Stars’ Afcon qualifying campaign will resume in September with a crucial match against the Central African Republic.
