According to Ernest Nogbey, Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, approximately 150 of the 184 people arrested by the military in a raid on Ashaiman on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, have been released.

The MP who saw the released individuals added that the remaining 30 are still being held in military custody.

On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, military personnel besieged the city with helicopters and armored vehicles to brutalize civilians following the murder of a military officer, Trooper Sherriff Imoro, who was allegedly stabbed in the town on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Ernest Nogbey in an interview with Citi News said they will push till all arrested residents are freed.

Ghana Armed Forces Statement about Ashaiman raid

In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) justified the brutality, saying that the raid was not to avenge the soldier’s death, but to apprehend the perpetrators of heinous crimes.

GAF announced that the swoop had been approved by its high command.
