The Louis XV era thriller “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp, had its world debut on Tuesday as the 76th Cannes Film Festival got underway.

This is the actor’s first film since his widely reported defamation trial with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, last year.

At the premiere, Depp, who portrays Depp Louis XV in the movie, walked the red carpet while pausing to chat with spectators and pose for pictures.

The festival will continue for the following 12 days amidst demonstrations in France and a strike by entertainment writers.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny” are both showing at Cannes.

At the festival, Scarlett Johansson, Alicia Vikander, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Sean Penn, the Weeknd, and Natalie Portman are all expected to make appearances.

At the occasion, Michael Douglas will be presented with an honorary Palme d’Or.
