Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will be renovated, the Sports Minister has said.
The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will shortly undertake considerable rehabilitation and maintenance work to ensure its fitness for athletic events, according to sports minister Mustapha Ussif.
In the Ghana Premier League this year, the stadium has been the home field for Real Tamale United and Tamale City.
Ussif said the government has already started a series of renovation projects on important sports stadiums across the country, including the Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, and the Essipon Sports Stadium in the Western Region, adding that “The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will also receive its share of renovation.” Ussif was speaking about the ongoing efforts to improve sports infrastructure in the country.
He added that these sporting facilities’ first phase of renovation and upkeep had been finished, and plans for a second phase were already in place. Ussif recently took a visit of the facilities to evaluate the issues the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium is facing and to make sure that necessary care and maintenance is provided.
The Minister also had a meeting with the National Sports Authority’s management at the Northern Regional Directorate to discuss the problem of power outages.
Due to an unpaid debt of GHc466,000, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo) recently interrupted the stadium’s power supply.
The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium is currently in a terrible condition, having had its last renovation ten years ago. The roof, restrooms, and well-liked stands in the VVIP section all require repairs.
Due to this, the site has constantly been refused by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) to hold international matches.
