Black Sherif, the 2023 Wireless Festival performer in the UK and the VGMA Artiste of the Year, has made a shocking admission to his followers regarding his time in college.

Born Mohammed Ismail Sherrif, the 21-year-old has generated a discussion regarding the importance of a university education for artists through a recent interview posted on Twitter.

In the video, a UK blogger who was covering the festival asked the singer of “Kweku The Traveller” about his first-year university experience studying marketing.

We are pleased that you left school to pursue music, the blogger questioned. I appreciate that. In your first year at the university, you majored in marketing. I’m curious about something. Did you learn anything about marketing during your year of study that you could share with me?

Blacko only occasionally attended class, as evidenced by his answer to the query. No, I attended to class maybe eight times, and I also played Fifa, he said.

His remarks instantly went viral on social media, with the majority of his followers disagreeing with his announcement. While some of his admirers disapproved of his activities and thought he did not appreciate his degree, others applauded him.

A fan tweeted, “B L A C K O to the whole WIASE”

Black Sherif’s experience is not unique as several Ghanaian artistes have also dropped out of school. The list includes Mzvee, Stonebwoy and D-Black who were all unable to balance school and their music careers successfully.

Many musicians and performers find it difficult to connect their coursework to their hobbies and passions, especially when they are only discovering them.

The question of whether Ghanaian colleges are doing enough to engage students and give them the abilities and information they require to be successful in their chosen fields is raised by this.

Others, such Samini, Stonebwoy, and Becca, have triumphed against all odds to finish their studies.

After finishing high school in 2021, Black Sherif enrolled in the University of Professional Studies, Accra. He reportedly abandoned his education that same year in favor of a burgeoning job, though.
