Nkrumah Memorial Park will soon be among West Africa’s top tourist and historical sites, according to President Akufo-Addo.
A year after he turned the sod to kick off construction on the project, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, commissioned the refurbished and updated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
The President stated that since the Park’s construction in 1991 and public opening in 1992 during the administration of the 4th Republic’s first President, His Excellency the late Jerry John Rawlings, the structure has significantly deteriorated.
He claimed that this is the reason he gave the tourism, arts, and culture minister, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, the order to temporarily close it so that renovations can be done.
It is encouraging to see that the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has not only undergone renovation but has also undergone a complete modernization to reflect its status as the final resting place of the justly celebrated Kwame Nkrumah, who led us to independence in 1957 and served as Ghana’s first President.
The Presidential Library, a Reception Facility, a Restaurant, a Freedom Wall, and a Digitalized Payment and Access System are currently available at the Park. The gravestone at the mausoleum has been upgraded, and the museum has been expanded with an audiovisual tunnel, according to Mr. Akufo-Addo.
Additionally, there is a renovated gift shop, a bigger leisure space, an upgraded VVIP lounge, and the first fountain area in West Africa with synchronized audiovisuals.
The president added that the government’s objectives to make Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park one of the top tourist destinations and historical landmarks in West Africa are aligned with the park’s $30 million (GH$30 million) modernization.
He declared that Dr. Nkrumah’s burial place “must be appropriate to his status and exceptional contribution to the liberation of Africa from colonialism and imperialism” as the greatest pan-Africanist of his generation.
