Chelsea have signed talented French attacker Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £52 million.

The 25-year-old, who scored 16 goals in 25 appearances last season in the Bundesliga, is boss Mauricio Pochettino’s first acquisition since taking over in May.

Nkunku said, “I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea,” expressing his happiness at joining the London club. It took a lot of work to get me to the club. This task excites me greatly, and I will be honored to wear the Chelsea shirt.

Eager to test his skills in the highly competitive Premier League, he added, “Having played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, I now want to play in the Premier League, one of the strongest leagues in the world. I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and teammates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch.”

Nkunku has an outstanding resume. He won two French Cups and three Ligue 1 championships during his four years at PSG before joining Leipzig in 2019. His deal with Chelsea begins on July 1.

In the 2021–22 season, he scored 20 goals and assisted 15 others, earning him the titles of Bundesliga Player of the Season and German PFA Player of the Season.

Notably, Nkunku recently contributed to Leipzig’s second straight triumph by scoring in the German Cup final. Leipzig placed third in the Bundesliga last year.
