Police – Calm restored, security strengthened in Daboya; 3 arrested over attacks
In connection with violent attacks on Mempeasem and Lukula communities in the Savannah Region by opposing factions in land and chieftaincy conflicts, the police have detained three people and are looking for more.
A group of roughly fifty (50) people broke into the Mempeasem neighborhood on May 30, 2023, and kidnapped a man who was 50 years old. When the Police responded to the attack, the gang, however, escaped into the jungle. The abducted victim was successfully rescued by the authorities, who also removed one (1) AK-47 firearm, 14 rounds of ammo, seven (7) motorcycles, and two (2) bicycles from the scene of the crime. After searching the area for the suspects, a bag carrying 240 AK-47 rounds was also found.
On June 1st, 2023, while conducting neighborhood patrols, authorities received a second distress call about a different gang attacking the Lukula village. The aforementioned suspects, who were on the loose, setting fire to homes and shooting people at random, shot at the police when they approached them. Razak Sulemana, Musah Shanun, and Karim Abdul Rafiuw were three of the suspects who were ultimately captured by the authorities when they responded quickly.
The three suspects are currently undergoing medical care at a hospital after suffering gunshot wounds during their capture.
One (1) pump action gun, two (2) single barrel guns, one (1) long knife, 80 live cartridges, a few talismans, and cowries were found after a search was conducted on them.
Following the establishment of calm, the police learned that an 81-year-old member of the Lukula village had allegedly been shot on his farm by the out-of-control gang. The police went to the property and helped the man’s children carry him to the hospital, where they officially declared him dead. Since then, the body has been left at the hospital for autopsy and preservation.
Following the contact between the police and the suspects and the following arrests, some people who were thought to be supporters of those arrested attacked the Daboya Police Station, damaging some louvre blades within the barracks as well as accident automobiles parked there. However, the Police withstood the assault and took charge of the situation.
In order to prevent such attacks, peace has since been restored and security has been boosted in Daboya and the areas around. To get the criminals, including those who attacked the Police Station, apprehended and brought to justice, efforts are still being made.
