When asked about his alleged involvement in a plot to have the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, removed from office, Superintendent George Asare testified before a parliamentary committee. He told the committee that he was getting ready to wear a white dress to celebrate the appointment of COP George Alex Mensah as the new IGP.

He added that his decision to prepare his white attire, which is indicative of celebration in the black community, was motivated by a guarantee provided to him and COP Mensah by Daniel Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He claimed that Mr. Mensah was a good police commissioner who was adored by many police officers and that giving him the top position in the police profession would have sparked a great deal of excitement among the officers.

After meeting Bugri Naabu, Superintendent Asare described the reasoning behind his plans to create a white dress: “Black men, when you hear good news, you will be in white apparel.”

On Monday, September 4, 2023, when he stood before the Committee, he provided the justification.

One of the people heard on video arguing for the ouster of IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is Superintendent Asare.

Following the public disclosure of the private tape of the conversation between Daniel Bugri Naabu, Superintendent Asare, and COP Mensah, Parliament established a committee to look into the situation.

Samuel Atta-Akyea, a representative representing Abuakwa South, serves as the committee’s chair.

The panel’s mandate is to look into both the veracity of the recording that was released and the complex charges that have drawn widespread attention.
