In order to prevent a leadership deficit in the judiciary, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to swiftly approve Justice Gertrude Torkonoo as the new Chief Justice.

Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who will retire from the office on May 24, 2021, will be replaced by Justice Torkonoo, who was proposed by the President.

The President indicated his desire for the approval procedure to go swiftly in a letter to the Speaker, so that Justice Torkonoo may take over the position as soon as feasible.

Justice Torkonoo, who has spent 19 years in the judiciary and the last four on the Supreme Court, would become Ghana’s third female Chief Justice if Parliament gave its approval.

Justice Torkonoo is President Akufo-Addo’s third choice for the Chief Justice position since he took office in January 2017.
