Yagbonwura concurs with Speaker Bagbin’s stance on LGBTQI issues.
Yabognwura BII Kunto Jewu Soale, the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, has made an impassioned plea to the Ghanaian Parliament’s leaders to follow guidance on the LGBTQ problem and never introduce any unsettling phenomena into the nation’s social structure.
According to the king, the issue of LGBTQ pending before the Parliament of Ghana is an abomination and alien to the cultural practices and norms of Ghana.
“Our ancestors will never forgive us should we sit aloof and allow such a decision to be taken by the law makers to affirm LGBTQ,” he stressed. Yagbonwura
“I am certain that, Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will unanimously disapprove the LGBTQ+ bill.”
The king made these remarks when the Speaker of Parliament paid a courtesy call on him at his private residence in Damongo as part of Parliament’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
Speaker Alban Sumana Bagbin responded to the Yagbonwura’s call by making it clear where he stands on the LGBTQ law.
“I have said it before and I’ll say it again: I’d sooner die than let the LGBTQ+ bill pass while I’m still alive, even though I’m not allowed to vote. Yagbonwura
“I run the House and I can assure you and the good people of Ghana that the LGBTQ+ bill will never be approved to be in Ghana,” the speaker of the House said. Yagbonwura
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs is currently examining the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, also known as the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.
The measure aims to protect Ghanaian family values and human sexual rights while outlawing the activities of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, and other queer people there.
If the bill is passed into law, a person who is found guilty might be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
