Trade Ministry: New cement factory construction has been halted.

The construction of cement factories in the country has been suspended.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has issued a directive that is effective immediately. It is a stopgap measure designed to expedite the granting of permissions by different regulatory bodies prior to the consideration of building new cement factories.

The directive was announced yesterday in Accra during the introduction of a national quality policy.

The strategy provides detailed guidelines for implementing a national quality infrastructure (NQI).

The NQI is a system made up of organizations that supervise the creation and provision of high-quality goods and services, as well as laws, policies, and legal and regulatory frameworks. cement

Demands

Dr. John Hawkins Asiedu, the ministry’s director of industrial parks and special economic zones, read the directive in a speech on behalf of Trade and Industry Minister K. T. Hammond.

The minister went on to say that the directive was meant to give the appropriate authorities the ability to deal with matters that the government was concerned about, like standards, quality control, and observance of environmental regulations.

In light of this, I have been collaborating closely with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to implement quality policy recommendations and some of the important features found in Act 2022 (Act 1078).

“This is to guarantee prompt action in all issues concerning the calibration, verification, and testing of weights or measures, or of weighing or measuring instruments and measurement systems,” he continued.

In order to improve revenue assurance, accountability, and transparency in the operations of all parties involved in the oil and gas sector, Mr. Hammond said he had also instructed the GSA to start the process of developing measuring standards for the industry.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, GSA Director-General Prof. Alex Dodoo stated that the enforcement of the quality policy and the organization’s five-year strategic plan is necessary to safeguard public health and safety.

He said that the new Standards Act, which gave the GSA the power to shut down businesses that produced or sold subpar goods, would be used to enforce standards rules.

Prof. Dodoo stated that the new law has eliminated the requirement for cooperation between the authority and the Ghana Police Service in order to enforce laws on standards, enabling the GSA to quickly implement the law.

Regarding policy

In April 2022, the Cabinet approved the National Quality Policy, which aligns with the Africa Quality Policy and worldwide best practices.

The Ghana Standards Authority Act (2022) and the Ghana National Accreditation Act (2023) were passed in response to the policy’s approval.

These have improved the country’s infrastructure and given the necessary resources to guarantee the development of top-notch goods and services there.
