James Gyakye Quayson, a troubled former member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who represented Assin North Constituency, has formally announced that he will run for office in the upcoming by-election under the NDC platform.

Due to the Supreme Court’s annulment of James Gyakye Quayson’s election, a by-election has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2023 by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Due to the fact that he had dual citizenship at the time he filed his petition to run in the 2020 parliamentary elections, the Supreme Court ordered Parliament to erase his name from the records of the legislature.

Mr. Quasyon urged the residents of Assin North to cast their votes for him in the next by-election in a press release dated June 1, 2023.

Prior to running for office in 2020, he stated that he had officially resigned his Canadian citizenship: “I renounced my Canadian citizenship in December 2019 and returned to Ghana to serve you, my people of Assin North. That was the truth when I stated on my Nomination Forms in October 2020 that I had no allegiance to any nation other than Ghana. Nobody has yet offered any proof that I was a Canadian citizen when I submitted my nominations, won your election, and was sworn in as your Member of Parliament. Gyakye Quayson

“Having made that argument, let me be clear to everyone that the bye-election, which is the outcome of what the Supreme Court announced on May 17, 2023, is what is most important to me right now. For the benefit of my constituents, I’m committed to continuing to serve the Assin North’s wonderful people with all of my heart, soul, body, and resources. Gyakye Quayson

Additionally, he said that the byelection will put an end to the crisis and that the people of Assin North’s will must prevail.

The need to reinstate democracy. I implore you all to cast your votes for me so that I can return to Parliament and carry on the job I started doing on your behalf to forward the development agenda for Assin North.

He added, “I have been deeply touched by the amazing support and encouragement from you in the constituency after the Supreme Court decision on May 17, 2023,” in his thank-you speech to the residents of Assin North. I was really touched by your display of love and support during the vigil the youth held in Assin Bereku on Sunday, May 28, 2023. The large turnout demonstrated the breadth of the support and inspiration I am experiencing. I felt genuinely moved
